elementals Near the bottom of the spiritual hierarchy are the four elementals: gnomes, salamanders, undines, and sylphs.

Gnomes, the earth creatures, are in charge of gold, silver, minerals, etc.

Next are the salamanders, the fire elementals, which live in the fire and look like small lizards or dragons and take care of the fire - sometimes destructively, sometimes for the good of man.

The undines, which are the water spirits, the mermaids of legends, live in the world of water and take care of that element.

Last are the sylphs, the air spirits, known in fables as fairies, which control the air element. They look like graceful young women and are gentle until they are disturbed or become angry; storms are said to be the result of their rages.
